What is Classwand?

From the outset we strive for educators to use Classwand as a springboard to preparing for and giving instruction. We started with a lesson preparation tool for importing media files, and student portfolio management for when student work is collected. In between are set of functions which you may well be familiar with and already exist in ARD. What we work to do is facilitate the use of those capabilities in new ways.

Classwand contains features designed to help instructors streamline processes and workflows. It has a lesson library manager where you can add files from your computer into lessons. It also has a portfolio manager used to store retrieved documents by students which you have taught. If you send a file (it can be any file provided there is a viewer for it to open it on the recipient's computer) to a student and he or she saves it, you can retrieve it back and automatically catalog it by name. A thumbnail of the document is available, and can be opened for your review. If you wanted to grade it, for instance, you could do so and then re-distribute it back to the student. You could add that file into a lesson and send it to all of the students to showcase how wonderful that student did, or simply distribute it back to that one computer to return it. Managing actions to perform these tasks is done by the program, so that you can focus on the class itself.

Other uses would be to have your students watch you give a slideshow where you can pan through different media in real time. You see a full screen view of your documents, movies, photos, etc. and the students see your screen. You can send documents to and from systems, open a web page on each computer in real time. There are additional scenarios which are discussed in the manual.

What does Classwand do that Apple Remote DesktopĀ® doesn't do?

Our aim is to consolidate and unify the tasks and workflows undertaken by instructors and wrap it beside lesson and portfolio management. In other words, incorporate files of all kinds before teaching and keep them at the ready in preparation for your classes. Since Classwand keeps enrolled students by account and computer name, it uses that to organize collected documents automatically for you on your hard drive by their name. That makes it easy to open up a collected document and mark it up since you have it cataloged for you. You can mark it up and then re-distribute it back to one or more if you wanted the following day. We hope you will see it as lesson and class focused.

Classwand is a compliment to Apple Remote DesktopĀ®, designed specifically for teaching and learning. It is designed to fit into each part of the instructional process, beginning with lesson design, through to giving the lesson, culminating with document distribution, collection, and grading.
